The Shark is a Threat that attacks the player and destroys the raft.

Summary[ | ]

The Shark, fittingly named "Bruce" by the Developers, is an enemy always present around the player's raft and can be heard as it swims nearby. It will attack the raft every 5 minutes, except when the player is away from the raft. Jumping into the water pauses this timer for the duration that it is targeting you. When the Shark attacks the player's raft, the Shark must be thwart by dealing 15 points of damage, or it will break the Foundation or Collection Net it is attacking. The player may repair the Foundation for 50% health per Plank, even while the Shark is attacking. As long as the player has enough Planks, they may repair the Foundation and stall the Shark. If a player enters the water while the Shark is swimming nearby, it will immediately turn around and chase that player, unless the player is too far away, or another player is closer. If killed, the player may loot the Shark within 5 minutes. The Shark will respawn after about 3 minutes of being looted.

If bitten by the Shark, the player takes 30 damage, making the Shark a four-bite killer.

The Shark can be momentarily pacified by throwing a Shark Bait into the water. The Shark will check for bait every 2 seconds. Once the bait has been eaten, the Shark won't attack another bait before 20 seconds have passed. The Shark can sense the bait up to 80 meters away, while only sensing the player 31 meters away.

Stabbing the Shark

Attacking the Shark while underwater just as it opens its mouth will cause it to turn and swim away, giving the player a few seconds to reach land or the raft. This method works well in single-player, but may prove difficult to anyone but the host on a Multiplayer server.

Please note that if you are trying to kill the Shark with the spear or machete, you must be moving left, right, or down and strike it on the nose as it opens its mouth. Otherwise, you will take damage from a Shark Bite. Once the player gets used to these, killing the Shark without taking damage shouldn't be a problem. Do note that the window for attacking the Shark without taking damage yourself is much smaller on Hard Mode. While the amount of hits is fairly high, the Shark has a very straightforward attack pattern.

Dodging

Sharks always lunge at the player just before biting, but they never move above the water surface. This means that a player can swim towards the shark, face on, and slightly before being attacked "Bob" out of the water and evade the attack. This works on all game modes and is a great way of returning to the raft after having looted an Island since the Sharks will almost always be swimming directly at the player.

Double-Weapon Strategy

To kill one or even two Sharks you just need a bow with some arrows and a Melee-Weapon. Just swim in the water and wait for the Shark(s) to attack you. Whenever they swim towards you shoot them with the bow just when it opens its mouth. This will prevent any damage as it dodges the attack. Immediatly after shooting the bow switch to your Melee-Weapon and hit the shark with it one or two times. This way you can deal alot of damage in just one shark-attack. If you play on hard and therefore have 2 sharks, you have to check for the second shark and focus on dodging the attacks by shooting the sharks with your bow. Using this strategy with metal arrows and a machete or better you will be able to kill both sharks in a few minutes every time you want to loot a riff.

Prevention

Placing Foundation Armor on Foundations and Collection Nets will cause the Shark to not attack the reinforced foundation. Alternatively, throwing Shark Bait into the water will distract the Shark for 80 seconds until it breaks the bait. Damaging the Shark with Weapons will cause him to swim away, later returning to the Shark Bait. If the player is still in the water after attacking a bait-eating Shark, it will return to attack the player.

Trivia[ | ]

  • The Shark is named Bruce by the developers, which is likely a reference to the movie Jaws or maybe Bruce from Finding Nemo
  • The Shark's model lacks claspers, a sexually dimorphic anatomical structure in sharks, indicating "Bruce" is likely female.
    • Due to this, The Shark has received a number of other names by the playerbase, such as Barbera or Grace.
